Cheating at Board Games

Playing board games with the boys

I’ve never much been into board games. Especially those board games with a lot of pieces, and dependent on die rolls. I’m not against games. I love playing strategy games, where your moves are more dependent on your plan.

When playing games with toddlers, the latter isn’t recommended. Tom’s greatest strategy to Connect4 is placing his piece above mine, no matter where I place my piece. I’ve begun devising ways to make four in a row in the hardest way possible, while assuming his next move.

However, Tom and Huck’s current favorite game is Candy Land. For those unfamiliar, you move based on the color presented on a card, as opposed to die rolls. And in playing with my hyper-competitive three-year old, and oblivious two-year old, I cheat like I’ve never cheated before.

I’m always three cards ahead of them, shuffling the deck to ensure the right person is receiving the right card.

“Oh, the ice cream cone that takes you 3/4 through the map, that’s going at the bottom of the pile.”

“Double green, I think I’ll flip that two cards down.”

Tom is 38-0 at Candy Land. He still has no idea that I let him win.
