The best way we’ve found to get Tom to help in cleaning is singing the age old, “Clean up, clean up, everybody everywhere,” song. It normally gets him singing along, and happily helping out.
We’re still working with him. He can pick up his blocks, and his dress up costumes. Those have well defined baskets where he can place his toys. He also knows that when he asks to be excused from the dinner table he needs to take his plate to the counter. Overall, he’s a great little helper.

However, he’s a regular old little Tom Sawyer when he misses up the words to the song, hardening back into the memorable whitewashing scene from his titular book:

Clean up, clean up, everybody everywhere.

Clean up, clean up, everybody do my share.
