Waiting – Hand and Foot

eggs for breakfast

Can’t make an omelet without cracking a few eggs

I’m a firm believer a child’s abilities will expand to the responsibility given to them. Huck surprised my wife by being able to get himself dressed and undressed. I simply gave him the opportunity to fail, and he figured out how to succeed.

Mother’s day assistance

Last weekend was Mother’s Day. Tom, Huck and I went to my aunt’s house for an extended family get together. And, as always, my Father was in charge of cooking breakfast. Tom wanted to be with his PopPop. He hung out by the omelet bar. Turns out, hanging out where all the work happens means you’re put to work.

“What you want?”

At first I only sent him out with omelets to deliver to the moms as they ordered them. He handled the task to perfection, with a “Bon Appetit!” for every delivery.

I then sent him out for orders, and really tested his ability to process multipart instructions.

He had to navigate the party, to find people he wasn’t that familiar with. Then he asked them what toppings they wanted. Afterwards, he had to relay that order to myself and PopPop.

Not only did he carry out all that, he’d then still take the finished omelets back to their intended recipient, and would run off for silverware, if needed.

After he was done with his own breakfast, I asked him to see if everyone was done with their plates, and then to clear off the tables.

Paying for work

After the party I took him to get some candy for all his excellent work. He did a great job, and I was sure to tell him.

Before we got home, I again told him how proud I am of him.

“You told me again. Do I get another snack?”

That’s…I mean…good point…but, that’s not how this works.
